A big change at Pandora

Tonight Pandora is making a fundamental change to the way we generate playlists. Up to this point Pandora stations have been driven entirely by the musical characteristics uncovered by the Music Genome Project. While this has provided us with a powerful foundation, we're the first to admit that sometimes we just got it terribly wrong.

Starting tonight we're adding an entirely new dimension to playlist generation: community feedback. Now our listeners' collective feedback has the power to correct for the cases where the "music alone" gets it wrong. When that happens our listeners vote with their thumbs and now - when the evidence is overwhelming that a song just simply doesn't belong on a particular station - that feedback will correct the station, not just for one listener, but for all listeners. In essence all our listeners just became part of the Music Genome Project team. Have a listen and let us know what you think.

Please note: this blog has moved to http://tomconrad.net, please do not post comments here.

So, selective pressures from the environment are weeding out negative traits and guiding the evolution of Pandora. I'm starting to get this whole "genome" metaphor. :-)

Hi Tom,

I just got back from Coachella so it is quite fortuitous that I was exposed to the Pandora Squeezebox & Pandora.com for the first time last evening. Now I can't seem to stop playing with Pandora.com. I love it!

I created a New Amsterdams playlist and shared it but was surprised that my friend did not get the exact songs that I'd been listening to, but a newly generated set...I can see the reasoning behind this but would have loved to share the exact list of songs that I'd been listening to, without saving each song individually to my favorites prior to sharing (since I'd rather not loiter by the computer if I don't have to...).

As for the community assistance in rating the tunes...any chance that you guys might consider a member rating feature? For example, you might find that I consistently dislike Hootie as an association with New Amsterdams (let's say...based on vocals) whereas someone else may agree that Hootie and New Amsterdams are very similar based on acoustic guitar.

Just some thoughts...haven't been this excited about a service in a while. However, be forewarned...

You're being blamed for the reduced hours of sleep... :)

Hi Tom,
I added a pandora's box to my blog but it does not appear. I am not sure what is wrong. I copy the full text as generated and paste it to a section of the sidebar (Titled: "My favorites at pandora") but when I save the changes to the template it simply does not appear. Could you please see this and let me know what I should do. I saw that yours appears, and by the way, nice selection. Thanks,

Hi hamesha,

Can you point me to the blog where you've added the sidebar? I'll take a look at the source and try to figure out what's going on.

I linked to this blog from mine, hope that's okay. Cool reading.

Have a great rest of the w-end.
